2009 Tour de France results, Mark Cavendish wins stage 2

Mark Cavendish (GBR) of Team Columbia-Highroad showed he is indeed the fastest man in the world after another great show of speed in stage 2 of the 2009 Tour de France today. With just 2 km to go, Cavendish in the front of the pack, sprinted ahead in the final 400m to win in 4 hours, 30 minutes, 2 seconds.

Tyler Farrar (USA) of Garmin-Slipstream finished second and Romain Feillu of Agritubel was third, both with the same time as Cavendish.

The general classification standings remain the same with Fabian Cancellara wearing the yellow jersey at a leading overall time of 4:49:34. Cancellera is 18 seconds ahead of Alberto Contador of Astana who is 2nd, and 19 seconds ahead of Bradley Wiggins of Garmin-Slipstream.

Lance Armstrong of Astana is still 10th in the general classification at 4 hours, 50 minutes, 14 seconds, 40 seconds behind Cancellara.

Today's 187 km stage started in Monaco and passed along the Cote d’Azur and through Nice, before travelling inland to finish in Brignoles. The stage featured four category climbs, with a flat finish, perfect for a sprinter like Mark Cavendish.
